Ho Chi Minh Trail
Former trail system, extending from northern Vietnam to southern Vietnam. It was opened in 1959 and used by North Vietnamese troops in the Vietnam War as the major military supply route. Starting south of Hanoi, the main trail traversed Laos and Cambodia on its way to South Vietnam and required more than a month's march to travel. With underground support facilities, including hospitals and weapons caches, it was the main route for the invasion of South Vietnam in 1975
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
U.S. dogsled race. It is held each March and run over a route between Anchorage and Nome, Alaska. It originated in 1967 as a race 56 mi (90 km) long, but by 1973 it had evolved into the current race, a 1,152-mi (1,855-km) trek roughly tracing an old mail route established in 1910. The race also commemorates an emergency mission to get medical supplies to Nome during a diphtheria epidemic in 1925. It typically takes 9-14 days to complete the race. See also dogsled racing
Oregon Trail
A historical overland route to the western United States extending from various cities on the Missouri River to the Oregon Country and later Oregon Territory. The trail was opened in 1842, and by 1845 more than 3,000 migrants had made the arduous journey. After the coming of the railroad, the trail fell into disuse and was finally abandoned in the 1870s. one of the main paths across the US to the western part of the country, used by pioneers (=people who are the first to go and live in an unknown land) in the mid-19th century. The Trail crossed the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains before turning towards Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. The journey took around six months, and was extremely dangerous. The pioneers did not have good equipment, and they often suffered from illness or were attacked by Native Americans. Major U.S. route to the Northwest in the 19th century. It stretched about 2,000 mi (3,200 km), from Independence, Mo., to the Columbia River region of Oregon. First used by fur traders and missionaries, it was heavily used in the 1840s by travelers to Oregon, including settlers of the "great migration," led by Marcus Whitman. Santa Fe Trail
A trade route to the southwest United States extending about 1,287 km (800 mi) westward from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
