From Middle English mameren (“to hesitate, be undecided, waver, mutter”), from Old English māmrian, māmorian (“to think through, deliberate, plan out, design”), from Proto-Germanic *maimrōnan (“to take care, worry”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to fall into thought, remember, take care”).
