Atom or group of atoms carrying a negative electric charge, indicated by a superscript minus sign after the chemical symbol. Anions in a liquid subjected to an electric field migrate toward the positive electrode (anode). Examples include hydroxyl (OH^-; see hydroxide), carbonate (CO3^2-), and phosphate (PO4^3-).
