alpha receptor: receptors postulated to exist on nerve cell membranes of the sympathetic nervous system in order to explain the specificity of certain agents that affect only some sympathetic activities (such as vasoconstriction and relaxation of intestinal muscles and contraction of smooth muscles)
alpha rhythm: the normal brainwave in the electroencephalogram of a person who is awake but relaxed; occurs with a frequency of 8-12 hertz
alpha smoothing factor: (Ticaret) In exponential smoothing, the factor used to smooth or filter the data from the most recent period. (ex.- an alpha factor of 0.1 means to give the most recent data period a weighting of 0.1 and the previous period(s) a weighting of 0.9). A higher alpha indicates the future forecast will more closely resemble recent history, and is more likely to vary greatly with each recalculation

In the standard C locale letters are just [A-Za-z] and ctype_alpha() is equivalent to (ctype_upper($text) || ctype_lower($text)) if $text is just a single character, but other languages have letters that are considered neither upper nor lower case
