[ 'al-b&-"tros, -"träs ] (noun.) 1672. An alteration of Portuguese word alcatraz (“gannet”), under influence of the Latin word albus (“white”); alcatraz comes from Arabic الغطاس (al-ġaţţās, “the diver”).
