Reggae, genel olarak ska, dub ve ragga gibi Jamaika'ya özgü tüm müzik türlerini tanımlamak için kullanılır. 1960'larda Jamaika'da ska ve rocksteady müziklerinden esinlenilerek doğmuştur. Temposu ska ve rocksteadye göre daha yavaştır. Özellikle roots reggae türü rastafarianizm ile içiçedir.
