Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. People who suffer from it are unable to relate their thoughts and feelings to what is happening around them and often withdraw from society. a serious mental illness in which someone's thoughts and feelings are not based on what is really happening around them (schizophrenie, from schizo- (from schizein; SCHISM) + phren ). Any of a group of severe mental disorders that have in common symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, blunted emotions, disorganized thinking, and withdrawal from reality. Stressful life experiences may help trigger its onset. Treatment consists of drug therapy and counseling. About one-third of all patients make a full recovery, one-third have recurring episodes, and one-third deteriorate into a chronic condition
