American transportation pioneer who organized the American Express Company (1850) and Wells, Fargo and Company (1852) to provide safe, swift transcontinental express service. City (pop., 2000: 90,599), eastern North Dakota, U.S. The state's largest city, it is located on the Red River of the North. It was founded in 1871 by the Northern Pacific Railway and named for William G. Fargo of Wells, Fargo & Co. The development of wheat growing in the area consolidated the city's role as a transportation, marketing, and distribution centre. Founded in 1852, Wells, Fargo transported gold between the west and east coasts in the wake of the California gold rush. By 1866 it had gained control of almost all stagecoach business in the West.
