    [ 'wol-(")n&t ] (noun.) before 12th century. Old English walhhnutu, from Proto-Germanic *walhoz (“Celt, Roman, foreigner”) ( > Walloon, Welsh) + Proto-Germanic *hnut- ( > nut). Cognate with Dutch walnoot, German Walnuss, Swedish valnöt. Compare more recent term Welsh onion, which also uses Welsh to mean “foreign”.
