ugandan affairs

    Hyphenation

    ugandan af·fairs

    Turkish pronunciation

    yugändın ıferz

    Pronunciation

    /ˌyo͞oˈgandən əˈferz/ /ˌjuːˈɡændən əˈfɛrz/

    Etymology

() Coined by Private Eye magazine. Having escaped in 1975 from Uganda, where she had briefly served Idi Amin as his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Princess Elizabeth of Toro was vilified by Amin. One of the (characteristically) increasingly absurd accusations to discredit her was that she had had sexual relations in a toilet at London Heathrow Airport. The phrase 'Ugandan affair/s' was immediately adopted by Private Eye, to allow it to accuse its targets of indulging in illicit sex in such a way that the magazine would not be actionable for libel. Nevertheless, the readership would know exactly what was being alleged.
