A thesis statement is a focused selection of text that can be anywhere from just one sentence to a few pages in size that clearly delineates the argument that will be taken in a proposed paper to be written. A thesis statement should be prepared in advance for all types of scientific writing, in order to give the paper a good structure
A very short summary of the thesis, often in one or two sentences Your thesis statement should appear in the first couple of paragraphs of your term paper
the controlling idea or argument of your essay: a thesis should be specific, contain an opinion rather than fact, and not announce your topic
- a statement of purpose that contains what the paper is going to prove AND how
a single sentence that formulates both the topic and the point of view of the researcher toward that topic; provides a way of making sure you know where you are heading and that you remain on the right track as you plan and write
A statement of your position on the issue you have chosen It may be a sentence or two, and should announce what you want to argue It should have three characteristics *It should attempt to convince readers of something, change their minds about something, or urge them to do something *It should address a problem for which no easy solution exists or ask a question to which no absolute answer exists *It should present a position that readers could disagree with realistically It should be so clear that it leaves no doubt in your mind or the reader's mind about what stand you are going to take about the issue, or what the issue is
A statement that articulates the purpose of a research paper
an assertion that states a position, is arguable, and the focus of a paper
