In broad terms Situational Awareness is a term used to describe a human operator’s perception of reality Based on the interpretation of available information the human will, at any given time, hold a set of beliefs about what is happening in the world around him and what action he should take If a discrepancy exists between his beliefs and the reality of the situation (as might occur in conditions of high mental or physical workload, or as a result of the poor display of information), situational awareness becomes degraded, possibly leading to a chain of errors
