A village of west-central New York on the Seneca River east-southeast of Rochester. The first women's rights convention was held here in 1848. Population: 7,370
(July 19-20, 1848) Assembly held at Seneca Falls, N.Y., that launched the U.S. woman suffrage movement. Initiated by Elizabeth Cady Stanton (who lived in Seneca Falls) and Lucretia Mott, the meeting was attended by more than 200 people, including 40 men. The group passed the Declaration of Sentiments, a list of grievances and demands modeled on the Declaration of Independence that called on women to organize and petition for their rights.
