Sekülarizm, sekülerlik, dünyacılık veya sekülerizm (zaman zaman sekülârizm) Latince'de "nesil", "periyod" (zaman dilimi) anlamına gelen zamanla Hristiyan Latincesi'nde "dünya" anlamında kullanılmaya başlanan sæculum’dan türemiştir. Din merkezli veyahut dinî öğeleri hukukî ve siyasî anlamda tayin edici kılan bir yaklaşımın tersine, bunları hukukî ve siyasî kümeden ayıran bir yaklaşımı tanımlar. Çok geniş bir terim olan sekülerizm, içinde birçok akım, farklı çeşit ve teori barındırır. Seküler kelimesi, dünyevi olanı belirtir ve dünyanın nesnel halinin göz önünde tutulması demektir. Türk Dil Kurumu sözlüğü sekülarizmi "Dünyacılık" olarak tanımlamakta ve Türkçe'ye Fransızca sécularisme sözcüğünden türeyerek geçtiğini belirtmektedir. Aynı Türk Dil Kurumu sözlüğü ise dünyacılığı ise su şekilde tarif etmektedir: "Bireysel katılımı önemli gören, dinin devletten ayrı ve özerk olmasını savunan öğreti, sekülarizm"
