Old English rōþor (“rudder”) from Proto-Germanic *rōþran (“rudder"; literally, "paddle, instrument for rowing”) from Proto-Germanic *rōanan "to row" from Proto-Indo-European *ere-, *rē- (“to row”) + Proto-Germanic *-þran, *-þraz, instrumental suffix.
