[ ne-(")fyü, chiefly Bri ] (noun.) 14th century. Middle English neveu, nepheu "nephew, grandson" from Old French neveu "nephew, grandson" (Modern French neveu "nephew") from Latin nepōtem, accusative of nepōs "nephew, grandson" from Proto-Indo-European *nepot- (“grandchild, sister's son”). Akin to Old High German nevo "nephew, grandson" (German Neffe "nephew"). Displaced native Middle English neve, neave "nephew, grandson" (from Old English nefa "nephew, grandson").
