    Etymology

() From Ukrainian Харків (Xárkiv) = Russian Харьков (Xár’kov). The city's name comes from the Kharkiv River. There is also a folk etymology that the city and river are named after a Cossack going by Харко (Xarkó) Харько (Xar’kó) Χαρίτων (Khariton), but there is no hard evidence supporting this.
