disapproval Ethnic cleansing is the process of using violent methods to force certain groups of people out of a particular area or country. In late May, government forces began the `ethnic cleansing' of the area around the town. The systematic elimination of an ethnic group or groups from a region or society, as by deportation, forced emigration, or genocide. the action of forcing people to leave an area or country because of their racial or national group. The term was widely employed in the 1990s to describe the brutal treatment of Bosniacs (Bosnian Muslims), ethnic Serbs in the Krajina region of Croatia, and ethnic Albanians in the Serbian province of Kosovo during the conflicts that erupted in the wake of the disintegration of Yugoslavia

() From ethnic + cleansing. Perhaps compare Serbo-Croatian etničko čišćenje, though this is probably attested later. Originally used of (and still chiefly associated with) the wars in former Yugoslavia during the 1990s.
