[ 'dau-tE ] (adjective.) before 12th century. From Middle English doughty, from Old English dohtiġ (“good, competent, valiant”), from Proto-Germanic *duχtiz (“note, usefulness”), from Proto-Indo-European *dheughe- (“to be ready, be sufficient”). Cognate with German tüchtig, Danish dygtig (“virtuous”) and Russian дюжий (“sturdy”).
