Achilles Painter
flourished 5th century BC Greek vase painter, named for an amphora decorated with a painting of Achilles and Briseis attributed to him. He was active in Athens in the time of Pericles and was a contemporary of Phidias. His Achilles vase ( 450 BC) is among the finest surviving examples of red-figure pottery from the Classical period. He is also known for his lekythoi (funerary vases with coloured figures on a white background), which are regarded as the most reliable documentation of monumental Greek paintings. Over 200 extant vase paintings are attributed to him
Berlin Painter
flourished 500-460 BC, Athens, Greece Greek vase painter, the outstanding vase painter of the late Archaic period. He is best known as the decorator of an amphora now in Berlin. Whereas it had been customary to frame the groups of figures on each side of the vase with pattern bands, the Berlin Painter eliminated the frame, allowing the figures to dominate and stand out sharply against the black background. Nearly 300 vases are attributed to him
Cleophrades Painter
or Kleophrades Painter flourished late 6th-early 5th century BC, Greece Greek vase painter. Of unknown identity, he takes his name from that of the potter who signed one of his principal works; he may have been a pupil of Euthymides. He decorated large vases with popular scenes, such as athletic contests and mythological epics, mostly in the red-figure style (see red-figure pottery). Over 100 vessels have been attributed to him
Marsyas Painter
flourished 350-325 BC, Greece Greek painter of the late Classical period, known for two containers, both dated 340-330 BC. Both are painted in the so-called Kerch style, named for the area north of the Black Sea where many such vessels were excavated. Characterized by slender, mannered forms, elaborate decoration, and polychrome effects, the Kerch style is thought to be the last major style of Attic red-figure pottery
Meidias Painter
flourished 420-400 BC, Greece Greek vase painter known for his theatrical "florid" style. A large hydria (water vessel) with scenes from the rape of the daughters of Leucippus and of Heracles in the garden of the Hesperides, now in the British Museum, is representative of his work
Niobid Painter
flourished 475-450 BC, Greece Greek vase painter, named for a calyx krater showing the death of the children of Niobe. Because the Niobid Painter made a deliberate effort to express space and depth by arranging figures on different levels, the vessel is thought to reflect the innovative technique of the now lost mural paintings of Polygnotus
Theophilus Shickel Painter
born Aug. 22, 1889, Salem, Va., U.S. died Oct. 5, 1969, Fort Stockton, Texas U.S. zoologist and cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1913. He was the first to show that the unusually large chromosomes in the salivary glands of Drosophila were particularly well suited for studies of genes and chromosomes. In the early 1930s he published a drawing of a section of a Drosophila chromosome showing more than 150 bands, which for the first time allowed the precise positions of genes to be determined
