born Jan. 26, 1929, New York, N.Y., U.S. U.S. cartoonist and dramatist. Feiffer learned his trade while assisting comic-strip artists. He became famous for Feiffer, a satirical strip whose verbal elements are usually monologues in which the speaker (sometimes pathetic, sometimes pompous) exposes his or her own insecurities. His drawings, syndicated from 1959, are collected in books beginning with Sick, Sick, Sick (1958). In 1986 he received a Pulitzer Prize. His plays, including Little Murders (1967; film, 1971), also blend farce and social criticism.
