a speedboat that is equipped with hydrofoils that lift it so that it skims the water at high speeds; "the museum houses a replica of the jet hydroplane that broke the record"
A hydrofoil is a boat which can travel partly out of the water on a pair of flat parts like wings. You can also refer to the flat parts as hydrofoils. a large boat with wing-shaped parts on the bottom that lift it above the surface of the water when it travels fast hovercraft (hydro- + foil, on the model of airfoil)
A craft more or less similar to the Hovercraft insofar as it flies over water and thus eliminates friction between the water and the hull Under acceleration it rises above water but remains in contact with the surface through supporting legs
1 A ship or boat design that lifts the hull above the water as speed increases, thereby lessening friction and increasing speed 2 Any ship or boat so designed
{i} structure attached to a boat designed to lift the hull above the water in order to increase the boat's speed; boat equipped with a structure that serves to increase speed by lifting the hull above the water
a device consisting of a flat or curved piece (as a metal plate) so that its surface reacts to the water it is passing through; "the fins of a fish act as hydrofoils
