a British woman who became the first woman to be officially accepted as a doctor by the British Medical Association (1836-1917). born June 9, 1836, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, Eng. died Dec. 17, 1917, Aldeburgh British physician. Denied admission to medical schools, she studied privately with physicians and in London hospitals and was the first woman licensed as a physician in Britain (1865).
