    [ 'a-nik-"dOt ] (noun.) circa 1721. From Ancient Greek ἀνέκδοτος (anekdotos, “accounts unpublished”) ἀν- (an-, “(negative prefix)”) (English an-) + ἔκδοτος (ekdotos, “published”) ἐκδίδωμι (ekdidōmi, “I publish”) ἐκ- (ek, “out”) + δίδωμι (didōmi, “I give”). Virtually identical cognates in other European languages – French anecdote, German Anekdote, among others.
