Dave Brubeck: orig. David Warren Brubeck born Dec. 6, 1920, Concord, Calif., U.S. U.S. jazz pianist and composer. Brubeck studied composition with Darius Milhaud before working as a jazz pianist. He formed a quartet with saxophonist Paul Desmond in 1951. His use of unconventional metres contributed to his immense appeal: the recording of Desmond's "Take Five" became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than a million copies. Dave Macon: orig. David Harrison Macon born Oct. 7, 1870, Smart Station, Warren county, Tenn., U.S. died March 22, 1952, Readyville, Tenn. U.S. country music singer and banjo player. He grew up in Nashville, where his parents ran a hotel that catered to traveling performers. He was in the mule business for 20 years; after the trucking industry put him out of business, he became a professional musician. Performing as Uncle Dave Macon, he entertained audiences with his jovial folk tunes, such as "Go Long Mule," and energetic showmanship. He is considered the first individual to become a star of the Grand Ole Opry, and he was an Opry regular from the mid-1920s until his death
Max and Dave Fleischer: born July 19, 1883, Vienna, Austria died Sept. 11, 1972, Woodland Hills, Calif., U.S. born July 14, 1894, New York, N.Y., U.S. died June 25, 1979, Hollywood, Calif. U.S. animators. The brothers worked as newspaper cartoonists before founding their own studio in 1921 to make animated cartoons. In the mid 1920s they produced the first sound-on-film animations. They later created and produced the popular cartoon series Betty Boop (1931-39), Popeye the Sailor (1929-42), and Superman (1941-42) and the feature-length cartoon Gulliver's Travels (1939)
