Şabat, Tanrı'nin dünyayı 6 günde yaratıp 7. günde dinlenmesini hatırlamak ve o günü kutsamak içindir. Şabat günü Yahudiler için dinlenme günü olduğundan ateş yakmak, paraya dokunmak, arabaya binmek gibi işler o gün yasaktır. On Emir'in dördüncü emri Şabat günü iş yapılmayacağı ile ilgilidir. Şabat günü Yahudiler gün boyu dinlenir, Tevrat okur ve sinagog'a (havra) giderek dua ederler. Şabat günü bir nevi bütün haftanın panaromasıdır. Şabat hem haftayı ve yaptıklarını düşünmek,hem Tanrı'ya yaklaşmak hem de daha iyi bir insan olmak için bir fısattır
