in full asan ibn Al ibn Ab lib born 624, Arabia died 680, Medina Grandson of Muhammad, the elder son of Muhammad's daughter Ftimah. He is one of the five most revered persons in the Shite branch of Islam. After the murder of his father, Al, in 661, he was seen by many as the Prophet's rightful heir. When Muwiyah I opposed asan's succession and began to prepare for war, asan raised an army to meet him. Plagued by defections, however, he opened peace negotiations within the year and abandoned the caliphate to his opponent. For the rest of his life he lived quietly in Medina. born 1906, Egypt died February 1949, Cairo Egyptian political and religious leader. He began teaching Arabic at a primary school in Ismailia in 1927. In 1928 he established the Muslim Brotherhood, which aimed at rejuvenating Islam and Egyptian society and expelling the British from Egypt. By 1940 it was attracting students, civil servants, and urban labourers to its ranks. He tried to maintain an alliance with the Egyptian government, but many members saw the government as betraying Egyptian nationalism, and after the war, members were implicated in several political assassinations, including that of Prime Minister al-Nuqrsh in 1948. asan al-Bann was assassinated with government involvement the next year
Hasan al- Turabi
born 1932, The Sudan Sudanese Muslim religious scholar and lawyer. After receiving a traditional Muslim education, he studied at the University of London and the Sorbonne in Paris. In the early 1950s he joined the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. While teaching law at the University of Khartoum (1957-65), he participated in the 1958 revolution that ended military rule. He later served in the national legislature (1965-67). He supported the 1985 overthrow of Gaafar Mohamed el-Nimeiri. That same year he formed the National Islamic Front (NIF), an incarnation of the Muslim Brotherhood. In 1989 the NIF supported a coup that brought Umar asan al-Bashr to power. He later served as speaker of the National Assembly (1996-98) and was arrested in 2001 during a power struggle with al-Bashr
Abu al-Hasan al- Ashari
born 873/874, Basra, Iraq died 935/936, Baghdad Muslim Arab theologian. He probably belonged to the family of Ab Ms al-Ashar, one of the Companions of the Prophet. He joined the Mutazilah school and compiled scholarly opinions in his Maqlt al-Islmyn ("Theological Opinions of the Muslims"). At about age 40 he concluded that his method had led to sterile concepts of God and humanity, and he turned to more orthodox theology. He expanded his Maqlt and authored Kitb al-Luma ("The Luminous Book"). Reflecting on the ideas of al-Muhsib and others, he created his own school, which became known as the Khorsn, or Asharite, school. See also Ashariyyah

in full Ab Sad ibn Ab al-asan Yasr al-Bar born 642, Medina, Arabia died 728, Basra, Iraq Muslim ascetic and major figure in early Islam. He took part in the conquest of eastern Iran as a young soldier. He then settled at Basra, and from 684 he was a popular preacher. He emphasized the practice of religious self-examination and asserted that true Muslims must live in a state of anxiety about their destiny after death. Rejecting determinism, he held that people are entirely responsible for their actions. Political opposition forced him into hiding (705-714), but he afterward lived openly in Basra. He is considered a founder of the two major schools of early Sunnite Islam, the Mutazilah and the Ashariyyah
