(deyim) A paradoxical situation
(deyim) From Joseph Heller's novel "Catch-22", set in World War II
{i} satirical novel by Joseph Heller which is set during the last stages of World War II

A difficult situation from which there is no escape because it involves mutually conflicting or dependent conditions

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to.

If you describe a situation as a Catch-22, you mean it is an impossible situation because you cannot do one thing until you do another thing, but you cannot do the second thing until you do the first thing. It's a Catch 22 situation here. Nobody wants to support you until you're successful, but without the support how can you ever be successful?. an impossible situation that you cannot solve because you need to do one thing in order to do a second thing, but you cannot do the second thing until you have done the first (Catch-22 book (1961) by Joseph Heller in which such situations are described)
