a technological product that is so good, or so innovatory, that it is irresistible to potential customers; especially a software product that persuades people to buy the hardware needed to use it
A software program which is so successful that it corners the market, or inspires people to upgrade their equipment in order to be able to use it
An application which is so compellingly useful that it prompts people to buy a different computer system in order to get it In the early days of personal computers, the IBM PC was very expensive and had little software available compared to other computers when it first came out But Lotus developed 1-2-3, a spreadsheet program which had some compelling advantages over VisiCalc, which was the dominant spreadsheet prior to that time 1-2-3 became so popular among business users that companies would buy the IBM PC, just so they could use it Thus, it became a "killer app" (short for "killer application") which made the IBM PC a success (PageMaker served a similar function for the Macintosh, and Mosaic had a similar effect on the Internet ) Since then, any company seeking to introduce a new technology looks for the "killer app" which will attract people to using it
Jargon in the computer industry for an application program that intentionally or unintentionally gets you to make the decision to buy the system the application runs on A classic example of a killer app was Lotus 1-2-3, the first popular spreadsheet program, and a killer app that helped introduce the personal computer into the department level of large and small businesses Similarly, R/2 and R/3 were killer apps establishing integrated standard software in enterprise - now it is on you to develop and deploy a series of killer apps for Internet-based collaboration
