An iodide
An antiseptic incorporating the element
A chemical element (symbol: I) with an atomic number of 53; one of the halogens
A chemical element found naturally in seawater and in many foods that is needed to produce thyroid hormone Iodized table salt has had iodine added to it
A nonmetallic element, of the halogen group, occurring always in combination, as in the iodides
Iodine is an element required in small amounts for healthy growth and development An adult body contains about 30 mg of iodine, mostly concentrated in the thyroid gland where it is needed to synthesize thyroid hormones
A trace element found in seawater necessary in small quantities for some reef invertebrates, particularly corals and clams
A sanitizing agent similar in use to chlorine Not widely used because relatively weak, cannot be stabilized, and tends to turn water greenish-yellow or even brown
A mineral added to salt to prevent a goiter, an iodine-deficiency condition
{i} nonmetallic element of the halogen group used in medicine and photography (Chemistry); powdered iodine mixed with ethyl alcohol to form an antiseptic solution
Optional on nutrition label unless added as a nutrient supplement A mineral Serves as a part of thyroid hormones Helps regulate how fast the body uses energy RDI = 150 mcg
The heaviest nonradioactive halogen, it is a nearly black crystalline solid (diatomic molecule I2) that sublimes (see sublimation) to a deep violet, irritating vapour. It is never found in nature uncombined. Its sources (mostly in brines and seaweeds) and compounds are usually iodides; iodates (small amounts in saltpeter) and periodates also occur. Dietary iodine is essential for thyroid gland function; in areas of the world where food contains insufficient iodine, an iodine compound such as potassium iodide (KI) is added to table salt (sodium chloride) to prevent iodine deficiency. Elemental iodine is used in medicine, in synthesizing some organic chemicals, in manufacturing dyes, in analytical chemistry (see analysis) to measure fat saturation (see hydrogenation) and to detect starch, and in photography. The radioactive isotope iodine-131 (see radioactivity), with an eight-day half-life, is very useful in medicine (see nuclear medicine) and other applications
The condition of the hair, skin, & teeth are dependent upon a well-functioning thyroid gland
When isolated it is in the form of dark gray metallic scales, resembling plumbago, soft but brittle, and emitting a chlorinelike odor
a tincture consisting of a solution of iodine in ethyl alcohol; applied topically to wounds as an antiseptic
What it's good for: Making thyroid hormones that control metabolism Where you get it: Lobster, shrimp, bread, milk and iodized salt RDA: 150 mcg for adults
a nonmetallic element belonging to the halogens; used especially in medicine and photography and in dyes; occurs naturally only in combination in small quantities (as in sea water or rocks)
Atomic weight 126
A trace element necessary to life in very small quantities, but deadly at higher concentrations Because it is removed by protein skimming, it must be added regularly on skimmed tanks It is especially needed by crustaceans to successfully molt and soft corals for growth
A essential mineral that is an integral part of the thyroid hormones, thyroxin and triodothyronine which have important metabolic roles and govern basal metabolism The best known iodine deficiency symptom is goiter Other iodine deficiency problems are reduced vitality, hypothyrodism, inability to think clearly, low resistance to infection, loss of control of the muscles of the mouth resulting in mouth contortion and drooling, defective teeth, tendency to obesity and cretinism which is a congenital abnormal condition marked by physical stunting and mental deficiency
One of the halogen gasses and a constituent in seawater Iodine based disinfectants are commonly used in aquaculture, these are collectively known as iodophores The iodophores are not as easily deactivated by organic matter (such as mud from boots, if being used in a footbath) as some others, and the brown colouration of the chemical fades as the activity decreases This gives a good indication of when the chemical is no longer active and needs replacing, unlike some other chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, which are clear Iodine base disinfectants do not evaporate as fast as some chlorine based ones, and so remain active for longer if used to disinfect floors etc
If heated, iodine volatilizes in beautiful violet vapors
Helps maintain thyroid function
Symbol I
A disinfectant and sanitizer that kills bacteria and prevents algae growth
is a nonmetallic element often used in medicine as an anticeptic
Iodine is a dark-coloured substance used in medicine and photography. a dark blue chemical substance that is used on wounds to prevent infection. It is a chemical element : symbol I (iode, from ion ). Nonmetallic chemical element, chemical symbol I, atomic number
An antiseptic, also called tincture of iodine
iodine-131
The radioactive isotope of iodine, 13153I, having a half-life of 8 days; used as a medical tracer
iodine deficiency
Inadequate intake or metabolism of iodine. It directly affects thyroid secretions, which influence heart action, nerve response, growth rate, and metabolism. Simple goitre, the most frequent result, is most common in areas without access to salt water and is rare along seacoasts. Severe, prolonged deficiency can cause hypothyroidism. Eating seafood regularly or using iodized table salt will prevent iodine deficiency. Some countries have made dietary iodine additives mandatory
iodine-125
light radioactive isotope of iodine with a half-life of 60 days; used as a tracer in thyroid studies and as a treatment for hyperthyroidism
iodine-131
heavy radioactive isotope of iodine with a half-life of 8 days; used in a sodium salt to diagnose thyroid disease and to treat goiter
quartz-iodine lamp
A quartz iodine lamp also called tungsten-halogen lamp, the halogen lamp or the quartz-halogen lamp is an incandescent lamp wherein a tungsten filament is sealed into a small transparent envelope filled with a halogen gas such as iodine or bromine. The halogen lamp can operate its filament at a higher temperature than in a standard vacuum or inert-gas filled lamp, without loss of operating life. This gives it a slightly higher efficiency than standard incandescent lamps
povidone iodine
(Pharmacology) yellowish-brown compound made from iodine and the polymer povidone (used as a topical antiseptic)
radioactive iodine excretion test
radioactive iodine test that measures the amount of radioactive iodine excreted in the urine
radioactive iodine test
test of thyroid function in which the patient is give an oral does of radioactive iodine-131
radioactive iodine uptake test
radioactive iodine test that measures the amount of radioactive iodine taken up by the thyroid gland
tincture of iodine
a tincture consisting of a solution of iodine in ethyl alcohol; applied topically to wounds as an antiseptic
