From Old French alabastre Latin alabaster (“box for perfume made of alabaster”) Ancient Greek ἀλάβαστρος (alabastros) ἀλάβαστος (alabastos, “vase made of alabaster”). This may further derive from the ancient Egyptian word a-labaste (vessel of the Egyptian goddess Bast) .
