(1841-1842) incident that began with a slave rebellion and hijacking of the U.S. brig Creole to the Bahamas and the subsequent attempt by the United States to reclaim the slaves
Fashoda Incident
(Sept. 18, 1898) Climax, at Fashoda, Egyptian Sudan, of a series of territorial disputes between Britain and France. Britain had sought to extend its empire from Cairo to the Cape of Good Hope, while France had sought to extend its own from Dakar to the Sudan. A French force under Jean-Baptiste Marchand was the first to arrive at a strategically located fort at Fashoda, soon followed by a British force under Lord Kitchener. After a tense standoff the French withdrew, but they continued to press claims to other posts in the region. In March 1899 the French and British agreed that the watershed of the Nile and the Congo rivers should mark the frontier between their spheres of influence

Marco Polo Bridge Incident
Conflict in 1937 between Chinese and Japanese troops near the Marco Polo Bridge outside Beijing. The incident was a culmination of the growing tensions between the two sides increasing Japanese aggression and Chinese reaction against it after Japan had occupied northeastern China and established its puppet state of Manchukuo in 1931. The skirmish expanded into a general war between Japan and China
Mukden Incident
(1931) Seizure of the Manchurian city of Mukden (now Shenyang, China). Responding to Russian pressure from the north and to the increasingly successful unification of China by Chiang Kai-shek, the Japanese garrison in Manchuria used the pretext of an explosion along its railway to occupy Mukden. With reinforcements from the Japanese colony of Korea, its army had occupied all of Manchuria within three months. The Chinese withdrew and allowed the Japanese to establish the state of Manchuguo
Pueblo Incident
(1968) Capture of the USS Pueblo, a Navy intelligence ship, by North Korea off its coast on Jan. 23, 1968. The U.S. initiated negotiations with North Korea to secure the release of its 83 crewmen. The resulting agreement allowed the U.S. to publicly disavow the confession the crew had signed while privately admitting its truth; the U.S. also acknowledged the ship's intrusion into North Korean waters and agreed not to undertake similar intelligence gathering activities in the future. An inquiry into the crew's confession and the conduct of the ship's commander produced no apparent disciplinary action
Xi'an Incident
or Sian Incident (1936) Seizure of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek by one of his generals, Chang Hsüeh-liang (Zhang Xueliang; 1898-2001), in order to persuade Chiang to postpone his war on the Chinese communists until the invading Japanese had been defeated. As a result of the incident, the Nationalists and communists formed an alliance that turned its attention to the Japanese in Manchuria. See also Manchukuo; People's Liberation Army
