Nörotravmanın ardından genç erişkinlerde en sık görülen nörolojik bozukluktur. Sadece ABD'de yaklaşık 350.000-400.000 doktorlarca tanı konmuş kişi vardır. Hastalığın nedeni daha tam olarak anlaşılmamış olmakla birlikte, genetik ve çevresel etkenlerin birleşimiyle ortaya çıktığına inanılmaktadır. Çeşitli tipleri olsa da tümü merkezi sınır sisteminin (MSS) yangısı (enflamasyonu) ile nitelenir ve miyelinsizleşme (sınır dokusunu saran özel miyelin proteinin bağışıklık sistemince yok edilmesi) ile ilerlemektedir. Başka bir deyişle MS, MSS'nin miyelinsizleşmesini ve yangısını içeren bir özbağışıklık hastalığıdır.
